Tarangire National Park in Tanzania

This lesser - known National Park has a special appeal and those who really know East Africa and where to find the most perfect places to view wildlife believe that Tanzania's Tarangire National Park is a true gem. This Park is home to one of Africa's densest populations of elephants.

Tarangire has just a handful of small and discreet camps, all carefully secreted throughout the park. There is a real feeling of remoteness and that authentic Africa sensation that is sometimes lacking in the region's bigger and busier reserves.

Set in 2,850sq km of thickish bush and slightly off Tanzania's main northern safari circuit, Tarangire is the best places to see the elephants, especially in the dry season between June and December. Guests can expect to see impressive herds of up to 300 animals and marvel at the huge number of elephants, as many as 2500 of them roaming the park at any given time.

Tarangire National Park offers an unrivalled opportunity to view the abundant wildlife close up and without encountering many other safari vehicles during the morning and evening game drives. In essence this is how safaris should be, with extraordinary high game densities and a minimal human presence.

This Park is Tanzania's sixth-largest National Park. It is criss-crossed by the Tarangire River, the area's only year round source of water and a haven for animals during the unrelenting dry seasons. The river attracts wildlife from far and wide.

Apart from its abundant elephant population, Tarangire is home to a variety of other wildlife including buffalo, impala, wildebeest, eland, zebra, gazelle, hartebeest. It is also probably the best place in Tanzania to view the rarely sighted fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk. There is also a selection of big cats.

Tarangire and the elephants are the main attraction for the safari lovers and in addition, however the park itself offers a special kind of solitude. This is marched by a diverse landscape that is unique to the region, featuring hills, baobab trees and tall grass that provides exceptionally good cover for local wildlife. Truly this is a National Park that one cant miss to explore when visiting Tanzania.
